Herbert Fried
Title: Professor, Research
Research: Theoretical aspects of Quantum Field Theory, (QFT) with emphasis on functional methods and eikonal approximations. Current work also deals with the suppression of quantum chaos for certain vectorial interactions by the mechanism of radiative corrections o

Professor Fried joined the Brown faculty in 1964 after two years as a visiting research physicist at the Courant Institute of New York University. He was an NSF Postdoctoral Fellow at École Normale Supèrieure, Paris, during 1957-58, spent the next three years as an Instructor at UCLA, followed by a year as Visiting Member at the IAS, Princeton. Since coming to Brown, he has spent a total of seven professional years performing research and teaching in France (Universitè de Marseille, CEN de Saclay, Universitè de Nice, Observatoire de Nice). He is the author of the books: "Functional Methods and Models in quantum Field Theory", The MIT Press, Cambridge, USA (1972); and the "Functional Methods and Eikonal Models", `Editions Frontières, Gif-sur-Yvette, France (1990).
Prof. Fried was Director of the NATO Advanced Study Insitute "Vacuum Structure in Intense Fields", Cargèse (Corsica), France; Co-director of the Workshop"`Large-Scale Structure in Non-Linear Physics", Villefranche-sur-Mer, France (1990); and Co-Director of the Vth Blois Workshop on High-Energy Scattering, held at Brown in June 1993. He has been Co-Director of the Workshops "QCD Vacuum Structure", "Quantum Infrared Physics", and "QCD: Collisions, Confinement, and Chaos", held at the American University of Paris in June of 1992, 1994, and 1996, respectively; and will be Co-Director of the "Fourth Workshop on QCD", to be held there in June of 1998.
