8a10.01 Earthly Seasons

PURPOSE: To show how the tilt of earth effects the seasons.

DESCRIPTION: A sphere coated thermal paint is mounted on a motor as shown in the photograph.  Heat from a cone heater causes the thermal paint to change color from yellow to red   Change the angle of the tilt and heat band will move from the equator to the northern hemisphere.

EQUIPMENT: Thermal globe with cone heater.  Note that the photo above is wrong and does not show the cone heater.

SETUP NOTES:

The thermal paint is Mercury (II) Silver Iodide powder mixed with a clear polyurethane.  

The Mercury (II) Silver Iodide is part number 93-8014 available from Strem Chemicals, Inc., 7 Mulliken Way,Dexter Industrial Park, Newburyport MA 01950.
