8a10.70 Solar Surface Convection

PURPOSE: To show convection cells.

DESCRIPTION: A fry pan containing a mixture of silicone oil and aluminum powder is heated.   Convection cells are formed, as shown in the photo.  Each cell has a volcano like geyser that carrys hot fluid up from the bottom of the pan.  The hot fluid reaches the surface of the cell and flows outward, toward the edge of the cell, where it cools and descends. 

EQUIPMENT: Silicone oil and metal powder fluid, fry pan, heater, as photographed.

SETUP NOTES: 35 minutes.

The oil is Ricoh Silicone oil for copiers, 16 oz. (1 pint).

The powder is Bronze powder by Luco, "Fine Aluminum Lining".  Sold by Leo Uhlfelder Co., Mount Vernon NY.
