PURPOSE: To illustrate charging by induction.
DESCRIPTION: Rub a pvc rod with a paper towel to separate negative charge. Hold the negatively charged rod near the foil leaf electroscope but do not touch it. Observe that the leaves deflect, but no touching or conduction has taken place.
EQUIPMENT: Pvc rod is stored in the electrostatic drawer in the electricity and magnetism cabinets, the paper towels are in the dispenser by the sink, the electroscope is in the electricity and magnetism cabinet, the projector is in the vault.
