5N20.40 TESLA COIL

PURPOSE: To demonstrate a Tesla coil and show how magnetic induction and resonance is used in the production of high-voltage and the wireless transmission of electricity

DESCRIPTION: The Tesla coil uses a large step up transformer to charge a capacitor. When the capacitor is fully charged a breakdown across a spark gap occurs and causes the capacitor to dump its charge into a tuned resonant RLC tank circuit. The tank circuit resonates and at a high frequency of about 200 kilohertz.

A hand held Tesla coil that can be used to light a neon lamp.

The Tesla Coil frequency is 175 kHz and the power is 500 Watts.

EQUIPMENT: Tesla coil.

SETUP TIME: None.
