PURPOSE: To illustrate how a siphon works.
DESCRIPTION: Fill both beakers with water. Connect the beakers with a hose. Raise a beaker to show the siphon effect and force water to flow from the upper beaker to the lower beaker.
Atmospheric pressure, and not cohesion, is the basis for the siphon. Will a
mercury siphon work on the moon? Is gravity needed for a siphon to work?
EQUIPMENT: Two beakers. Hose.
SETUP NOTES: Clamp the hoses into the beakers.
