4b50.60 Greenhouse effect

PURPOSE: To show the greenhouse effect.

DESCRIPTION: A sheet of copper is warmed with a heat lamp and the temperature is measured with a thermocouple, as shown in the photo.  The equilibrium temperature is recorded.  When a glass cover is placed between the lamp and the copper sheet the temperature starts to drop.  After some time the temperature drop stops, reverses, and begins to rise to a higher equilibrium temperature. \

Use a 200 Watt bulb placed about 6 to 8 inches from the surface.  Prewarm the surface to between 77.5 and 85 C.  Add the glass cover.  For the first four minutes the temp drops.  After 43 minutes the temp rises to a higher temp.

EQUIPMENT: Greenhouse effect apparatus, as photographed.

SETUP NOTES: 1 hour.
