Summary written by Michael Ji {jekimerider310@yahoo.com} Comment: Barry Sonnenfield's new film BIG TROUBLE is a film that manages to cram about a dozen characters in less than ninety minutes. It's one of those six degrees of seperation screw-ball comedies when a person or group of people wind up meeting or getting involved with others which all connect by the end. Think Robert Altman situation mixed with Blake Edwards comedy and characters. Tim Allen is one of the characters who is a ad creator who's son is playing a high school game where he plans to get a fellow female student (Zooey Deschannel) "marked" or "wet" in a popular game, where the girl's mom (Rene Russo) mets and falls in love with Allen's character while Russo's husband (Stanley Tucci) is a marked target by two Newark hitmen (one of the men is played by the always entertaining Dennis Farina). Where a beatnik who lives in a tree nearby (Jason Lee) who falls in love with the family maid, and was insulted by two of the dumbest criminals on the face of the Earth (one of the criminals is talented character actor Tom Sizemore), and the plot goes on which centers around a nuclear bomb being sold in the black market. BIG TROUBLE is a highly entertaining movie showcasing Soennenfield's talent when directing comedies. He has proven his talent with other well done comedies like GET SHORTY and MEN IN BLACK. But like GET SHORTY, BIG TROUBLE is a film that you have to watch from start to finnish to get the jokes. If you miss as little as ten minutes of the film, you would get lost. There are scenes that are amusing at first, but then work up to a great and very hysterical end by the climax. I enjoyed the acting by all the actors. I'm not usually a fan of Tim Allen's work (except for GALAXY QUEST), but with BIG TROUBLE Allen does a great job not mugging up the screen by playing a low key sarcastic father. Rene Russo, Jeane Garafolo, Jason Lee, Patrick Warburn, Dennis Farina, Tom Sizemore, Stanley Tucci, and Andy Richter (Conan's former sidekick) all give great performances in this very well done comedy. But if anything stands out is Sonnenfield's directing, who manages to fit a well developed plot (from Pulitzer Prize winning writer Dave Barry) and plenty of jokes into a 85 minute film. The sad and disturbing thing is that the film makes jokes about airport security and hijacking airplanes. I know that this film was made several months before the tragedy of September 11th, but this film showcases a different time in U.S. history. A time when one wasn't nervous or affraid of flying on a airplane and when securty wasn't as strict as now. I can understand how some people will be upset or disturbed by these jokes, but they need to remember that this was filmed at a time when America was still innocent from terrorist attacks. Otherwise, if you have around ninety minutes or so to pass, then BIG TROUBLE is a must to see. It's one of those rare excellent five reels films. It will entertain you from start to finish, and you still will have plenty of time to go to the nightclubs after it's over! ***** (out of five) IMDB Rating: 6.3 Country: USA Language: Subtitels: No () DVDs: 1 IMDB address
